Workshops & Training

There are several ways to find and participate in acting workshops:

  1. Browse our Resources page: We maintain an updated directory of workshops, training programs, and educational institutions across Canada. Visit our Resources page to explore options.
  2. Read our workshop coverage: Our blog features detailed articles about specific workshops, including what to expect, instructor profiles, and participant experiences.
  3. Contact us for recommendations: Not sure which workshop is right for you? Reach out through our Contact page, and we'll provide personalized recommendations based on your experience level and goals.

Most workshops accept registrations directly through their own websites or by email. Requirements vary—some are open to all levels, while others require auditions or prior experience.

Northern Drama is primarily an information and community platform—we don't currently operate our own training programs. Instead, we connect aspiring actors and theatre professionals with the best workshops, institutions, and training opportunities available across Canada.

Our value lies in our extensive knowledge of the theatre training landscape, allowing us to guide you toward programs that match your specific needs, whether that's voice training, stage combat, method acting, or classical theatre techniques.

Yes! The workshops we feature range from beginner-friendly introductory classes to advanced intensive programs for experienced professionals. In our workshop coverage, we always specify the experience level required.

Many of the institutions we work with offer foundations courses specifically designed for people with little to no acting experience. These programs provide a supportive environment to learn the basics of voice, movement, scene work, and performance technique.

If you're new to acting and unsure where to start, contact us, and we'll point you toward beginner-appropriate options in your area.

Performances & Festivals

Yes, most of the theatre productions and festivals we cover are open to the public and welcome all audience members. Tickets can typically be purchased through:

  • The theatre's box office (in person or by phone)
  • Online ticketing platforms
  • Festival websites for multi-show events

Many theatres offer rush tickets, student discounts, or pay-what-you-can performances to make theatre more accessible. Check individual theatre websites for specific policies and pricing.

When we write about specific productions or festivals, we include information about how to purchase tickets and attend. Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to experience live Canadian theatre.

Our editorial team selects productions based on several factors:

  • Artistic merit: Productions that showcase exceptional craft, innovative approaches, or compelling storytelling
  • Emerging voices: Work by up-and-coming playwrights, directors, and actors who represent the future of Canadian theatre
  • Diversity: Productions that reflect the full spectrum of Canadian experiences and perspectives
  • Regional representation: We strive to cover theatre across Canada, not just major urban centers
  • Community impact: Productions that engage with important social issues or innovative audience engagement

We welcome suggestions from our community. If you know of a production that deserves attention, please contact us.

Content & Submissions

We welcome pitches from freelance writers, theatre practitioners, and community members who have stories to tell about Canadian theatre. To submit a pitch:

  1. Email us at: info@northerndrama.com with "Story Pitch" in the subject line
  2. Include in your pitch:
    • Brief summary of your proposed article (2-3 paragraphs)
    • Why this story matters to Canadian theatre
    • Your relevant experience or connection to the topic
    • Links to previous published work (if available)

We typically respond to pitches within two weeks. Due to volume, we can't respond to all submissions, but we review every pitch carefully.

We're particularly interested in stories about underrepresented communities, innovative theatrical approaches, and regional theatre outside major urban centers.

We're always looking for compelling Canadian theatre stories to share with our community. If you have a production, workshop, or theatre initiative you'd like us to consider covering:

Contact us via our Contact page with:

  • Brief description of your production or initiative
  • What makes it unique or newsworthy
  • Performance dates and venue information
  • High-resolution images (if available)
  • Press kit or additional materials

While we can't guarantee coverage of every submission, we review all requests and feature productions that align with our editorial mission of celebrating Canadian theatre excellence and diversity.
